Hello St. Toms,
Many of you have been writing to ask about what adjustments St. Toms will make to our COVID-19 protocols. I want to be very transparent and let you know where we stand on these questions.
We received word from the Diocese last week that they are in the process of evaluating Diocesan-wide protocols in light of recent announcements from public health officials.
You may also be aware that Fr. Tom, our pastor, has been away preaching a retreat and getting a few days of rest with family. Though I have been left in charge of the parish in his absence, the Church doesn't foresee a parochial vicar doing anything novel in the absence of the pastor. So we will continue to observe our current protocols at this time. Once we receive updated protocols from our Bishop, St. Toms' leadership team will sit down along with Fr. Tom to evaluate.
Fr. Chris tells me that a few people were giving our ushers flack at this morning's Mass for doing their jobs and upholding our protocols. Let me be clear: This kind of behavior is unacceptable. Our ushers are volunteers, and they have done phenomenal work to help us worship safely for almost a year now. Their work has been nothing less than heroic, and they deserve our appreciation. Next time you see one of them at Mass, please thank them for their work.
In the meantime, let's strive to observe charity in all things. Be kind to one another. Build one another up. Let's also be patient. The time will come when we will be able to have a more regular celebration of our liturgies. Every step we take toward this is a cause of joy. When that time comes I look forward to the vibrant liturgies that our parish is known for. Know that you all remain in my prayers.
In Christ,
Fr. Brent Bowen, O.P.
Parochial Vicar, Director of Evangelization
